Nestled in the heart of Lagos, Nigeria, stands the Nike Art Gallery, a vibrant testament to the nation’s rich and diverse artistic tapestry. Founded in 2009 by the renowned textile artist Nike Davies-Okundaye, the gallery has blossomed into a cultural landmark, showcasing an unparalleled collection of over 8,000 artworks by both established and emerging Nigerian talents.

A Visionary Patron of the Arts

Born in Ogidi, Kogi State, Nike’s artistic journey began at a young age. Immersed in the traditional Yoruba Oshogbo textile dyeing techniques, she honed her skills and went on to establish herself as a leading figure in the contemporary art scene. However, her passion extended beyond her own artistic pursuits. Recognizing the need for a platform to nurture and promote Nigerian art, Nike embarked on the ambitious project of establishing the Nike Art Gallery.

A Treasure Trove of Nigerian Creativity

Housed in a five-story edifice, the gallery pulsates with the energy of Nigerian creativity. Its walls are adorned with a breathtaking array of paintings, sculptures, textiles, installations, and mixed-media pieces. Each artwork tells a story, reflecting the vibrant spirit, social commentary, and rich cultural heritage of Nigeria. Visitors can lose themselves in the intricate patterns of Adire fabrics, marvel at the powerful bronze sculptures, or be captivated by the evocative contemporary pieces that challenge and redefine artistic boundaries.

Beyond the Gallery Walls

The Nike Art Gallery’s impact transcends the exhibition space. It serves as a vital hub for artistic development, offering workshops, residencies, and educational programs that empower aspiring artists. Nike’s dedication to nurturing young talent is evident in the establishment of additional Nike Art Centres in Oshogbo, Ogidi, and Abuja, each providing a space for artistic exploration and cultural exchange.

If you ever find yourself in Lagos, a visit to the Nike Art Gallery is an absolute must. It’s an experience that will leave you awestruck, inspired, and forever connected to the vibrant soul of Nigerian art.
